A heated discussion? I really don't see much room for argument. Her sound is unique, this is for sure. It's a little more difficult for me to really "analyze" it all because she does mostly sing in French, which I don't speak, so that sort of changes the perspective of things. But yes, I agree her "technique" is "fairly rare", as you put it. She has found a balance between many different styles, often all presented within the context of one song. She sounds very trained at times, very natural at others, and yet still other times she can "belt" as they call it (I don't really know how to describe that another way). Really to give you the best answer I would have to talk to her about it, or hear her sing some scales or something. But don't we all want to talk to her
