Was browsing around on Amazon.fr last night listening to samples and discovered Jorane. After downloading some mp3s off kazaa I'm absolutely in love with her! She's likened to a French Tori Amos, and as far as I know she has two albums, Vent Fou and 16mm.

Wondering if anyone here listens to her and can tell me more about her? Faffing about on amazon.fr didn't help me much since I don't speak French Sad

Holy moly has no one given her a listen since this post I put up yonks ago? Shocked Googled her and struggled through amazon.fr again (I barely speak French Embarassed) and this is what I know: She's French-Canadian, the cello is her weapon-of-choice, and she's pretty prolific - one album per year since her 1999 debut Vent Fou. If anyone is inclined, start with Vent Fou, her debut - it's amazing!

A promo photo:

Her debut album, Vent Fou:

And if this might encourage some of you to listen to her - I reckon if you like Zazie and Keren Ann, you may like her Smile

Hello !
This Jorane seems to be more "quebecois" than french : )
Maybe this didn't help anybody to promote her here since she seems to be unknown in France, at least to me...

Maybe a little mp3 would help convinve the crowds ? Wink

This is the link to Jorane's song !

Just for you right here, right now !

I've been listening to it, I don't know what to say. The music is very relaxing, very nice, but she's making too much voice effects for me to like her way of singing anyway !

Hi occasional utopia! I missed your post way back in may, but if I'd seen it I would have surely downloaded an album or two of hers to give her a try. A lady with a cello is my kinda music! Wink
Needless to say, I'm onto emule to download Vent Fou and 16mm. Hmm, there also seems quite a number of her live albums also available which I might get later if I like her. Razz

Thanks for the link, kiouty. I don't know about her style of singing yet, but I may indeed learn to love it. I'll save my opinion till I hear hear more of her stuff. If there are anymore of these cello ladies or even harpist ladies that people can reccommend that would be cool. Razz

Thanks for putting the mp3 up kiouty! Smile I get the bit about her voice, Jorane's music is quite an acquired taste! Juré is one of her more elaborate songs, I would upload other mp3s but unfortunately I only have one other track from Vent Fou and a few from her soundtrack albums thanks to my ex-laptop crashing a couple of months ago Evil or Very Mad From memory I recommend these songs: Comme Avant and Hier Nuit.

Well considering I've yet to be bothered to watch a single Olympics event, I'm obviously not an Aussie Razz Kidding. Seriously, I wish I was Aussie tho. Ethnically Chinese, Malaysian by citizenship and currently in Melbourne by default because I chose to study in Monash (a decision I now regret).

I just listened to the MP3 kiouty posted. My opinion: this is the closest we've yet come to hearing a French-language version of Tori Amos. Even the way she fluctuates her voice seems to be a copy to some degree. But, since I like Tori Amos, I don't mind too much. It's just a relief that the girl plays cello as opposed to piano, else there wouldn't be any point in listening to her.

I was browsing around for Keren Ann material and stumbled upon some hi-res Jorane pictures, which are slightly disturbing. Razz I've uploaded them here:

Mungo: share the albums when you get your hands on them! I'm currently experiencing connection problems, so I'm unable to log onto P2P networks for the time being.

Ah! This is like Tori Amos! Shocked Very Happy

And apparently she has a new album coming out? This is too good to be true.

And Kam, those are indeed some creepy pictures!

The third picture is quite frightening indeed. Perhaps because it looks like she doesn't have eyebrows there. Who was it that liked the ugly lady factor? Ricky? Razz

Hopefully I'll finish the download and be able to share them in the channel by tomorrow.

I have a similar ethnicity to yours and I'm not an Aussie citizen either (although I plan to be very soon, boo to Singapore N.S.) I find your music taste interesting though, you have good taste! Wink

Edit: Alright, finished downloading Jorane's albums 16mm and Vent Fou and they're now available in the channel. You'll have to "show full paths" when you browse me though, because I haven't bothered to rename them.

Ah you NS dodger you! Brilliant plan you have there tho Wink Unfortunately I can't access the Jorane stuff in the download channel, I don't think I'm authorised to access it. I also vaguely remember reading a thread many moons ago abt people requesting access to it and getting refused cos it's by invitation only, so I'll have to wait till I have a decent amount of posts I suppose Very Happy Or maybe it's time to make some Canadian friends so they can buy her cds for me and send them over Laughing
