I can't download from eMule either as long as I'm on the network at my school. I've been trying to get my hands on the French dubbed version but any one at this point would be nice. From what I've heard and read, Giorgino is probably pretty different from anything else we've ever seen! Someday it will be nice to get this glimpse into Laurent's world. Smile

I just watched Giorgino last night and wanted to post my reaction. Don't read on if you don't want to read any spoilers. Also, a tremendous thank you to the person who helped me procure the DVD Heehee!

This film took some time to absorb! All in all I liked it a lot, despite it being one of the most disturbing films I've watched. Where to begin? First off, I thought that the acting was very good. I was shocked to see how good an actress Mylène is; I think she pulled off that role perfectly. Something about Jeff Dahlgren reminded me of Johnny Depp in Edward Scissorhands, it must have been his quiet voice and somewhat odd (but gentle) demeanor (however, in a film full of every possible lunatic, Giorgino definitely comes off as the most "normal"!). The only slight problem I had at first was the accents, but I think that's because I'm used to hearing actors using British accents in English-language films set in the past. But here for the most part everyone's accent seemed American (Louise Fletcher's [innkeeper] in particular seemed too "modern"), with the exception of Frances Barber's (Marie) British accent. The different accents didn't bother me too much though.

The film is of course long, but I didn't spot any scene that immediately seemed like it should be cut. I've read a lot about people saying how they felt that the basement scene of the asylum was insupportable, but for me one of the most disturbing scenes was the "celebration" in the inn while that woman keeps trying to get poor Catherine to apologize and forcing her to drink while Giorgino is blindfolded among those dreadful village women. Shocked Oh God, what a horrible village! In some ways it reminded me of a Lord of the Flies-type scenario, where a society has just become barbaric. . . .

There are a lot of themes that could be explored here, a lot that I haven't really thought over enough yet. For example, there's that cuckoo clock that chimes during certain scenes with Giorgino in the inn. I guess the most obvious interpretation is that the people he's with are crazy, but there's a lot of insanity of all kinds in this film so is the "cuckoo's commentary" on the villagers, Giorgino, society, or something else? There's also a bit of oral fixation here, I think some of it might have shocked me if I hadn't been warned in advance (Catherine still having a wet nurse, the whole "suck your thumb" thing with Giorgino, Catherine still sucking her thumb). And then there's the whole Christ's head issue and the horse in the church at the end of the film, which is undoubtedly some kind of negative commentary on religion. I also wonder what can be read into this pretty bizarre, basically women-only village, is there any message to be found? I couldn't find any of these village women sympathetic, even when I felt like I should have some sympathy for them (like during the whole "Died for France" bit). They just made me shudder, they were hideous in so many ways! I also found the scene with Dr. Degrâce standing by his sleeping daughter before Marie rushes in a bit disturbing, particularly because of Marie's reaction (I can't exactly remember what she said now but she seems pretty angry to find Degrâce by his daughter like that and asks him if he drugged her, which made me wonder if he had a history of this kind of behavior). I couldn't find any real evidence of a father's impropriety toward his daughter but knowing LB I'm sure this scene was meant to make us uncomfortable in any event. Catherine really just epitomizes the innocent woman-child, of being sexual without being aware of being sexual (a good example of this is the nighttime scene when Giorgino stumbles upon Catherine with Marie; if you watch Catherine's hand you'll see she's doing something that a lot of little kids do quite innocently). Death, religion, insanity, adult and child sexuality, wolves . . . welcome to the world of LB, ladies and gentlemen!

But despite the movie's unnerving atmosphere, there was also a bit of comedy! I think the funniest scenes were when Giorgino blows that party toy (I forget its name) before Mme Degrâce's funeral (at the doctor's urging!) and the whole "Kiss Daddy!" scene, poor Giorgino!

Well, that's my two cents for now, I think it's time to wrap up this post before it gets even longer! But all in all I think it's a pity that this film isn't commercially available. I understand that this film was basically a part of LB's heart and its failure really hurt him, but it's a film with a lot of merit that will only be more appreciated with time.

I read that Mylene's film "Giogino" was originally filmed in English and then later dubbed into French. Has an English-language version of the film ever surfaced? If so, does anyone know where it might be purchased/found? (Amazon doesn't have it.)

I just saw Giorgino right now, and since I can't write a good review I'll just comment on your excellent response to this film.

I was also reminded of that Depp role. In fact, not just by Jeff Dahlgren but also, in a way, by Mylène herself.
Regarding Louise Fletcher, having seen her in other roles (Star Trek DS9) I wonder if she's ever played a likeable character. With her voice and manner of speaking, she almost invites you to question her sincerity in anything she says.

Now that you mention it, that particular scene could have been spliced right out of the film without leaving a mark. Given the scene centers around the mad blocking out sunlight by lining windows with excrement, this says something about the film as a whole. In other words, there's enough unsettling in the film - this scene, shocking as it is, doesn't really need to be there.

Seeing LB's other work, I'm more inclined towards the obvious interpretation [eg. to show carnal lust in Beyond My Control he showed wolves tearing into flesh].

Again, it reminded me almost instantly of the themes in Sans Logique (even in appearance, the old women look the same). The theme of elderly people, maybe representing a society corrupted, playing some sort of sick game only they know the rules for, maybe representative of age-old rules of conduct, social norms and mores, the controlling force of religion, or something else.

I wonder if LB really did have a specific history written for each of these characters or if he just gave us scenes like this to create an unsettling atmosphere. Maybe both. (If they do have real histories written out, they must be pretty disturbing ones)

I agree with you on your first point (more about that later). In a way, the tremendous failure of this film is its main "selling point". I mean, that's why I watched it. What kind of film does so poorly? After watching it, I think many people just had no incentive to see it in the first place. Certainly it was better than I what I heard of it.

As for the commercial availability, I have the following question:
Can I break this up and upload it to RapidShare?
If this film is truly available only through download channels then there shouldn't be a problem. But if there's a single entity out there that's charging money to send people this film, then it would be illegal to upload it for free. Anyone know anything about this?
